Primare R20

A company with as long a heritage of fine audio reproduction as Primare could not relegate phono reproduction to an afterthought, and the result is the thoroughly engineered R20 Phono Preamplifier, a full featured phono stage that allows for the use of both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges to the best advantage of either type. As with all Primare designs, the power supply for any product is of paramount importance, leading to the custom designed inboard toroidal transformer providing the foundation for the R20's high capacity power supply. This feeds a truly musical pre-amplifier circuit that is as quiet as it is linear. With setup features, conveniently located on the outside of the unit, to ensure the cartridge is loaded properly to perform at its best, the R20 builds on the company's tradition of ease of use in the service of great sound.

Some recordings you simply cannot live without. More often than not, these treasured performances are stored on vinyl only, so you need a high-quality turntable, tone arm and pick-up cartridge to enjoy them. But the interface between the turntable and a modern sound system is as critical to the end result as the choice of any other component.

The Primare R20 will successfully bridge the divide between recordings from the golden years and today’s Hi-Fi systems, giving classic performances a new vitality.

The R20 accepts the output from both moving-magnet and moving-coil type cartridges. Gain and impedance can be adjusted to fine-tune the connection for maximum fidelity. The R20’s output is configured to match the input characteristics of Primare amplifiers or other high-quality audio designs.

"The Steelhead is the most flexible, user-friendly phono section I've ever encountered." "Overall, the Steelhead delivered the best vinyl playback I've heard from my system. It combined speed, frequency extension, resolution, harmonic structure, focus, air, stage depth, image specificity, and, most important, overall musical coherence in a way that made the music seem to fly from the speakers unrestrained by mechanical or electrical bounds." Audio Analogue Aria"The Audio Analogue Aria is another brilliant example how sophisticated engineering (cf. off-line PSU) and choices made "by ear" can successfully live together and cooperate. The Aria proves, once again, that a properly installed vinyl playback system is still very hard to beat. " - TNT Audio

"Most striking about its sound was the depth and power of the bass - it really is in another league from the Pro-ject Phono Box SE or Musical Fidelity X-LPSv3 - if not the Trichord Dino. It was the sheer depth of sound that impressed. Vocals were extremely well projected, and there was excellent staging and separation of various musicians"- Dominic Todd HiFi World
