how to judge the sound?
You don’t need trained ears to judge the reproduction of
sound from a hifi-system. Everybody have the abilities it takes. Here are some
simple ideas that will get you started in listening.
can you follow the melody?
You can enjoy music delivered by a transistor radio, especially if you already know and like it. But if you want to develop your musical taste, the quality of the sound must be good enough to reveal the talents of the musicians, and your system must able to communicate the messages, the composer has built into it. All humans understand music – we even learn to sing before we write. As adults, however, we must learn to appreciate the music in order to understand the many advantages you get from it.
It is a personal matter to choose how good a sound quality you need. Because we all have our own individual and refined standard “built in the soul”, the best way to evaluate a hifi-system is to use the ears and judge what you hear from your own personal standards.
To “follow the melody” seems to be an almost too simple way to judge a hifi-system, but the music itself reveals several of the hifi-systems abilities, that we can’t measure or calculate. Technical specifications do not tell you how a hifi-system sounds. You simply have to listen to different systems to find one that pleases you. The only way to do that is to believe, what you ears tell you.
When you listen to a hifi-system try to follow to melody of the music inside your head. In this case it is better NOT to know the music. This method can be used to evaluate separate components as well as complete systems. Try to follow the melody even when you visit friends, are in the supermarket, on a restaurant and so on. You will quickly discover that you easily can hear the differences and that there is a big difference in the systems abilities to make it easy to follow the melody.
After a short “training period” you can easily decide whether a hifi-system will please you for many years. When you go to live music it affects your state of mind: You relax, dream or feel like dancing. You need a hifi-system that can generate the same emotions when you are home. If a hifi-system makes it difficult for you to follow the melody even though you really try to concentrate, it will make you tired and eventually it will not be used very much. It is not because your ears are wrong but simply because the hifi-system is not good enough for you.
You do not need trained ears to follow a melody. All humans can hear which direction the melody is taking and everybody can hear a false note in the concert hall. By comparing different components or hifi-systems ability to deliver the natural flow of the music, you have a reliable tool to find the best system for you.
You can ask yourself three questions while you listen:
1) Can you hear all the musicians all the time and can you hear what
one of them plays or sings – or does it demand extra concentration
to focus on some of them?
2) Can you follow the individual melodies of each instrument - or does
it sound like some instruments play the same note with the same volume
all the time?
3) Can you easily follow the rhythm of the music – or does it sound
like some instrument are “stumbling” in the rhythm or lacking
behind?
If it is still hard for you to evaluate the sound, turn up the volume
and after a while turn off the system. Then ask yourself: Was it a relief
or a pity? If turning off the music is a relief, you probably should
find a better system. But if it seemed like a pity that the music disappeared,
the hifi-system must have some qualities that you appreciate. If a hifi-system
makes you curious and makes you want to listen to more music – or
if you simply can’t wait to put on some more music, you have found
a system, that will please you for many years.
